CYO/Camp Howard
Overview
Expert Summary
Detailed Insights
CYO/Camp Howard presents a deeply split experience. While the 'Camp Howard' summer camp itself offers children memorable and fun, non-fancy experiences with dedicated and caring leadership focused on improvements, the CYO-run basketball league is plagued by severe issues. Parents seeking a summer camp might find value in the positive camper experiences, but those considering the basketball league should be extremely cautious due to widespread referee inconsistencies, perceived bias, and reported unfair treatment of parents.

💡Pro Tips from Reviews
- →For the summer camp: Focus on the positive camper experiences and the dedicated leadership, but be aware of potential internal management issues that may indirectly affect the experience.
- →For the basketball league: Exercise extreme caution. Be prepared for highly inconsistent and potentially biased officiating. Challenging referee calls could lead to severe consequences, including parental bans, with little recourse from the league commissioner.
Things to Consider
- ⚠Widespread reports of biased, inconsistent, and unfair refereeing in the CYO basketball league, particularly from older referees (Reviews 1, 2).
- ⚠Referees in the basketball league are accused of using their position to be controlling, disrespectful, and making false accusations (Review 1).
- ⚠Parents of entire teams have been banned from remaining league games/tournaments based solely on referee reports, without opportunity for the team's side to be heard (Reviews 1, 2).
- ⚠The basketball league commissioner is unresponsive and unhelpful in addressing parental disputes (Review 2).
- ⚠Significant concerns about the summer camp's internal management, described as 'poorly managed' and in a 'constant state of disorganization' (Review 5).
- ⚠Assistant Director Shawna King is specifically criticized for lacking people skills and treating staff poorly (Review 5).
- ⚠Staff at the camp reportedly feel 'kept out of the loop' and are disgruntled (Review 5).
- ⚠Allegations of 'ungodly' behavior and bullying by referees towards 3rd graders and supportive adults in a faith-based league (Review 1).
Price & Value
The Camp Howard summer program is described as 'not a 'fancy' camp at all' (Review 4), which may indicate a more value-oriented or rustic pricing, though no specific costs are provided. For the CYO basketball league, the severe negative experiences and unfair treatment described suggest poor value, regardless of the actual cost.

2 months agoBecause I couldn't give zero stars, My 1 star goes to the referees who chose to be fair instead of enlisting in acts of bigotry. Before every game a 3rd grader would read a prayer and in that prayer there was always a mention of the opposing team being our brothers and sisters. Yet our 3rd graders weren't treated as such. The referees with morals were of the younger generation. The referees that decided they'd use their position to be unfair and controlling were of the X and baby boomer generation (which is no surprise to me.) These old bigots are exactly why this sin sick world fails to thrive emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Near the end of the season one of the power eager referees called off a game at the start of 3rd quarter after disrespectfully speaking to another adult and had the audacity to think no one would call him out on his "mess". This lead to false accusations reported and all parents of our 3rd graders banned from the remaining games. Today, the last game, the referees were an "elderly" woman and a young man. I assumed this would be a fair game. Wrong! This old woman was relentless. She was far worse than any of the men who had made unfair calls, unnecessary calls and turning an eye to the opposing teams errors/mistakes. Not only did I think this woman was biased and rude she was also dishonest. She stopped the game to come over and ask me who I was there for, then told others I said I was a Mom. She never asked if I was the Mom or an other. What she asked was and I quote "Which number are you here for?" I told her the number she asked "White?" (The color of the jerseys) I said "Yes." and she walked away and asked the principal, the coach and my Grandson who I was. It was obvious she wanted so much to have me thrown out of the game for no other reason but cheering for "the wrong team". For me it was hurtful to see a woman at this age act so ungodly towards young children and in a Christian environment. The saddest part of it all is watching these little guys play together without a care in the world before the games and sometimes after but then being treated as unequal on the court. For the little guys that were cheated this was unfair to say the least but it is also unfair to the "favored" team. What are they learning from this kind of behavior? Shame on CYO and shame on the out of control referees who bullied these 3rd graders and any adult who stood up for them. Remember, For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings. Proverbs 5:21

2 months agoI honestly wish that I could give the CYO organization 0 stars! We just ended the basketball season with the CYO and this will be our last. The “seasoned” referees were a joke throughout the season and there was no consistency on what the kids were going to get called on. Each game was a surprise with what was allowed and don’t you even think to ask for any verification on the refs calls! The parents of our entire team were banned from attending any of the tournament games based solely on the words of the refs that were being challenged. We were treated as if we were criminals all because our coach challenged the refs calls. The commissioner was no help in any of this and refused to hear our teams side of what transpired during a single game that caused us to get banned from the remainder of the season. They are truly a disgraceful organization, especially to be considered a faith based league. Completely disgusted with our experience. Please think twice before signing your children up with the CYO.

11 months agoI had the pleasure of working with Sr. Krista on some improvements of the camp this off season. I can tell her and her team care deeply about the camp and what they can provide to their community. I would highly recommend this camp based on the professionalism and kindness of their team.

2 years agoThe kids in our neighborhood (Torreyview area) went for years. We even timed the weeks so us parents would be fancy free at the same time. My kids loved it---came back with so many funny stories. One was a bunch of 12 year-old boys surrounding a fish they'd caught that wouldn't die. The nun came over and clubbed it! Several boys fainted. Good stuff. Sorry to hear about some negative reviews but this is not a 'fancy' camp at all.

6 years agoThis is the most poorly managed camp I've ever been to. Shawna king, the assistant director, has no people skills and doesn't know how to treat staff. She's like a disgruntled office worker. Past and present staff complain of the place being in a constant state of disorganization and all staff being constantly kept out of the loop. It's been poorly managed for years and will remain that way, sadly.
