DFW SURF offers a range of water activities like paddleboard and kayak rentals and lessons on Lake Lewisville. It is particularly well-regarded for its patient paddleboarding instruction (suitable for first-timers of various comfort levels, allowing participants to sit or stand), friendly staff (e.g., Alex), and provided safety gear (life vests). On-site amenities include lockers, and they also offer bike rentals and various tours, with a membership option for frequent visitors.

Why families love it

  • Patient and helpful instructors for paddleboarding, like Alex, who allow participants to learn at their own pace (starting on knees, then standing, or staying seated).
  • Life vests/belts and paddles are provided and set up by an employee.
  • On-site lockers are available for securing personal belongings.
  • Excellent customer service, both for pre-arrival inquiries and on-site assistance.
  • Offers a variety of activities including paddleboard rentals, kayak rentals, bike rentals, and structured paddleboard tours.
  • First-time stand-up paddleboarders found the experience easier than expected with good teaching.

Insider tips

  • Budget for an *additional $20 park entrance fee* per vehicle/person (clarify exact park entry requirements with DFW SURF or the park) on top of the activity cost.
  • If your child needs detailed, hands-on instruction for kayaking, inquire specifically about the level of guidance provided before booking.
  • Consider a club membership if you plan multiple visits, as reviewers suggest the benefits can make it cost-effective.
  • Verify the age appropriateness of specific tours (e.g., 'Sip and Paddle') if planning a family outing, as some are clearly designed for adults.
  • Arrive prepared to sign waivers and utilize the provided lockers for your belongings.
  • Don't be intimidated by SUP; first-timers found it easier than expected with good instruction.

Good to know before you go

  • Families seeking extensive, hands-on instruction for kayaking, as it may be more self-directed.
  • If you are on a strict budget and the *additional $20 park entrance fee* (plus activity costs) is a significant concern.
  • Booking adult-oriented tours (e.g., 'Paddle and Pints', 'Sip and Paddle') for children without confirming their suitability.
  • Kayaking experiences may have minimal instruction, which might require parents/children to be comfortable figuring things out on their own.
  • There is an *additional $20 fee* to enter the park area itself, which is separate from DFW SURF's activity costs and can be a hidden expense.
Value
Pricing for specific activities is not explicitly stated in the reviews. However, a significant concern is an *additional $20 fee* required to enter the park area itself, which is separate from DFW SURF's activity costs. This effectively increases the total cost for parents. The value includes patient instruction for paddleboarding, provided equipment (life vest, paddle, board/kayak), and on-site lockers. A club membership is recommended as a way for frequent visitors to make the overall experience more cost-effective, with benefits that 'pay for itself'.
Accessibility
No specific accommodations for special needs mentioned in the reviews.
Safety
Life vests/belts are provided and an employee assists with setting them up for participants.

What parents say

North Texas Adventure Ladies

"If you want to learn to Paddleboard this is the place to go. Adventure Ladies had a lesson on Saturday. When you arrive you will sign your waiver and then go put your things in a locker that’s provided. Then head down to the lake where the paddleboards are lined up along the lake. An employee will get you set up with a life vest/belt and paddle. After going over some basic info it’s time to get on water. You will start out on your knees to get a feel for it. Once you are away from the water edge, the instructor will show you how to stand up and paddle. It’s great to at least try to stand "

"Did paddle and pints and it did not disappoint! First time doing SUP and it was awesome. Teaching was good and the company was even better. Honestly thought it would be much harder than it was. Can’t wait to go back!"

"4 to 4.5 stars. First time kayaking, and really enjoyed the experience. The customer service was great when I called in advance with some questions, and they were very fast and attentive on-site to get us going. Didn't really give us much instruction, but it was probably more fun as we figured it out on our own. Only price keeps this from being 5 stars - especially since it costs an extra $20 just to enter the park area itself."
