2 weeks agoGreat panoramic views of Tucson and the valley. Great geological history at this location, once a volcano that erupted to create this range. The CCC built this road/pass in the 1930s and still has a few buildings to visit. Parking is available. Day use only. Bathrooms are available. Trails are light and good for novice. Stay mindful of snakes, terrain as you walk on an unimproved trail. Cacti along the way.

2 months agoI went twice in one day! I went for the sunrise and it was magnificent. Then I went to work and went right back for an afternoon hike to the bottom of the pass. Pretty of easy to follow trails. The path down to the bottom of the pass is considerably steep so if you have joint issues I do not recommend the trail to the bottom. There are still other trailheads in the park as well! Really got to appreciate the environment up close on the trails. Just another reminder of how important nature parks are. I had a great time out there exploring just myself. It is only 30 minutes or so from Tucson. I will visit this area every time I come out for work.

5 months agoGates Pass, near Tucson Arizona, has a pretty cool story behind it. It all began in 1883 when Thomas Gates, a local pioneer, saloon keeper, and rancher, decided he needed a shortcut to his carbonate mine in Avra Valley. So, he went exploring and found this awesome natural canyon with bubbling springs, streams, and lush growth. Gates paid $1,000 to clear and grade the winding road over this pass, which now bears his name. And, today, Arizona's famous sunsets (second only to Florida Gulfs, IMHO) make this a popular spot for locals and tourists.
