About McKay Bay Nature Park

This nature park is described as containing a mangrove sanctuary with potentially unique flora and fauna. However, these natural elements are severely overshadowed by extreme neglect, unsanitary conditions, and safety concerns, making it unsuitable for a family visit at this time.

What parents should know

Summarized from real visitor reviews.

Best for: Not recommended for any age group due to unsafe, unsanitary, and potentially inappropriate conditions.

Insider tips

  • Do not visit this park with children until official reports confirm significant infrastructure repairs, a thorough cleanup, consistent maintenance, and improved safety measures are in place and verified by recent, positive visitor reviews.
  • Avoid if sensitive to strong, unpleasant industrial odors.

Good to know before you go

  • Any parent or family seeking a clean, safe, and family-friendly outdoor nature experience.
  • Families looking for pleasant hiking, easy trail navigation, or traditional bird-watching activities with children.
  • Anyone sensitive to strong, unpleasant industrial odors.
  • Any time until major rehabilitation of the park is completed and officially confirmed.
  • Extreme and unsanitary litter observed throughout the park, including baby wipes, condom wrappers, used condoms, stray underwear, and full cigarettes.
Value
Pricing for entry is not mentioned. However, given the extensive reports of neglect, unsanitary conditions, and safety hazards, the park offers no value for families at its current state, regardless of cost.
Accessibility
No specific accommodations for special needs are mentioned. The descriptions of overgrown trails and a damaged/closed boardwalk strongly suggest poor accessibility for strollers or wheelchairs.
Safety
No safety features are reported. Instead, the reviews highlight significant safety and hygiene hazards, including extreme litter (used condoms, cigarettes), potentially unsafe social activities (M4M pick-up spot), damaged infrastructure (destroyed boardwalk), and overgrown, poorly maintained trails.

"I have never before seen so many baby wipes, condom wrappers, used condoms, stray underwear and full cigarettes in my entire LIFE. This place is disgusting! How dare y'all let the wildlife live in these conditions!"

"A nature preserve in the industrial part of town. Looks like the boardwalk was either destroyed by last year’s hurricane as they where close the trail that I took was next to some factories with horrible smell. I would not recommend this park till they at least fix the boardwalk."
