What parents should know

Summarized from real visitor reviews.

Best for: Providing a memorable 'first play experience' for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-aged children.Families seeking highly organized and welcoming summer camp opportunities for their children.Parents looking for interactive and engaging theatrical performances for young children.A fun family outing with kindergarteners, as some productions offer relatable and touching themes for both children and parents.**Infants (under 1 year):** Require a full-price ticket, but engagement is minimal. (e.g., 9-month-old mentioned).

Why families love it

  • Interactive play experiences for young children (e.g., 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star', 'The Three Little Kittens').
  • High-quality and 'amazing productions' (e.g., 'Pippi Longstocking', 'Llama Llama Red Pajama').
  • Engaging and 'fantastic' actors.
  • Lobby area equipped with toys to entertain children while waiting for performances to start.
  • Specialized 'Snuggery Theater' series specifically tailored 'for the very young'.
  • Summer camps are described as 'absolutely the best organized'.

Insider tips

  • Be aware that infants (e.g., 9 months old) require a full-price ticket, even if they are too young to fully engage with the performance.
  • For younger children, prepare them in advance that any interactive props or 'swag bag' items provided during the show must be left at the theater to prevent distress.
  • If interested in summer camps, plan to register early as the schedule is released early in the year and demand may be high.
  • Utilize the lobby's provided toys to entertain young children while waiting for the play to begin.

Good to know before you go

  • Bringing infants under 1 year old if the full-price ticket cost for minimal engagement is a significant concern.
  • Bringing young children who are easily distressed by having to leave toys or props behind, without prior preparation or managing expectations about the items.
  • Full-price tickets are required for infants (e.g., 9-month-old) who may not comprehend or engage with the performance.
  • Interactive 'swag bags' or props given to children during performances must be left at the venue, which can cause distress and crying for young children who wish to take them home.
Value
High-quality productions and interactive experiences are generally well-received. However, parents should be aware of a potentially negative value proposition regarding infants, as a full-price ticket is required for a 9-month-old who 'had zero clue what was going on'.
Accessibility
No specific accessibility accommodations are mentioned in the reviews.
Safety
No explicit safety features are mentioned, but 'smooth drop off and pickup' for camps suggests organized child transitions.

"Be still my heart!!! I remember visiting the NCT in the late 70s as an elementary student. Well, years later, I took my granddaughter for her first play experience and she was in awe!!! We went to see "Pippi Longstocking" and it was an amazing production! She will definitely be returning for more adventures in the arts! Thank you NCT for the most memorable experience ❤️"

"My son, 3.5, and I went to Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. This is part of the Snuggery Theater for the very young. It was his first play, and it was wonderful. We both really enjoyed it. It was interactive and the actors were fantastic! The lobby had toys to entertain the kids while they waited for the play to start. We will definitely be going to more plays here."

"Nashville Children’s Theater has absolutely the best organized summer camps. I really appreciate how early in the year they release their summer camp schedule (helps a lot in planning the summer), how seamlessly the website works on the day registration opens, how thorough and thoughtful their orientation packet is, and how smoothly drop off and pickup is run. On top of all that, the staff is so warm and welcoming. It’s very clear that they make every effort for every child to feel welcome. My daughter had so much fun at her first NCT camp and looks forward to doing many more. Thanks NCT!"
