Insider tips

  • If you are a healthy senior seeking challenging fitness classes, inquire specifically about class content and age-based placement policies before joining.
  • Investigate membership pricing carefully, as it may be significantly higher if you are between 35 and 55 years old.
  • Before relying on the steam room, sauna, or jacuzzi, confirm their operational status and any usage restrictions.
  • Consider the deep water aerobics class with Amy Wilson for a social and effective workout.
  • If specific dietary needs (e.g., Kosher) are important, inquire about their catering options for events or potential family dining.

Good to know before you go

  • If you are a healthy senior looking for highly challenging, age-restricted weight classes, as reported experiences indicate a potential mismatch.
  • Expecting consistent access to steam room, sauna, or jacuzzi without prior verification due to reported downtimes and restrictions.
  • Membership can be quite pricey for individuals between 35 and 55 years old.
  • Issues with age-based class restrictions, where healthy seniors felt inappropriately directed to less challenging classes (e.g., chair class instead of weight class).
  • Questionable commitment to maintaining steam room, sauna, and jacuzzi due to reported downtime and increasing restrictions on use.
Crowds
Generally not overly crowded for fitness facilities; reviewer 'almost never had to wait for a weight machine and never had to wait for a cardio machine'.
Value
Memberships can be quite pricey for individuals aged 35-55. Discounts are noted for those under 35 or over 55. The value is high for those who appreciate the extensive workout facilities, community atmosphere, and unique spa amenities, provided these amenities are consistently available.
Food
Offers Kosher food options for events/retreats, with emphasis on fresh, tasty, healthy, and securely packed meals (double/triple/quadruple saran wrap for reheating).
Accessibility
Described as having people of 'all ages and fitness levels', suggesting a welcoming environment for varied physical capabilities, but no specific ADA-compliant features or special needs accommodations are explicitly mentioned.
Safety
Staff (Pete) diligently watches participants in the deep water aerobics class and guards the recreational pool, providing a strong sense of security.

"Very disappointed.i work out daily in my home gym and I’m quite fit, but I hoped to join a gym to take some classes and change things up a bit. I called the JCC as many of my friends belong, and I was told that I could not take the weight class I requested because of my age! The chair class that I was asked to take was a major letdown. The instructor was very nice and she also wondered why I would take that class. As there are no classes available to healthy seniors that provide any challenge, perhaps you should look elsewhere"

"JCC has the best workout facilities anywhere around for those of us who aren’t young or super fit and don’t like loud music. I love that there are people there of all ages and fitness levels. They have a huge selection of weights (machines and free weights) in the weight room and a large selection of cardio equipment (treadmills, rowing machines, stair masters, stationary bicycles, regular ellipticals, lateral ellipticals). I’ve almost never had to wait for a weight machine and never had to wait for a cardio machine. There’s also an area for stretching and floor work. I’ve never felt as comfor"

"Great gym space in the Richmond area - though the memberships can be quite pricey unless you're under 35 or over 55. The real hidden gem is the full steam room, sauna and jacuzzi - a rarity in the Richmond area and a real treat on the muscles after a long workout. Thhough I sometimes question their commitment to keeping these amenities given their downtime and the seemingly increasing restrictions on use."
