About Cinemark Merriam and XD
A smaller, cozier alternative to massive theater chains that offers the cheapest matinee prices in the area, though it can suffer from crowd control issues and occasional maintenance oversights.
What parents should know
Summarized from real visitor reviews.
Best for: Budget-conscious families looking for cheap matinee screeningsMoviegoers who prefer a smaller, cozier theater setting over large chainsTeens (frequently present, sometimes unsupervised)Older kids and families (attending releases like Minecraft or 3D movies)
Why families love it
- Highly affordable matinee ticket prices
- Cozy, smaller-scale theater atmosphere with personal touches
- Comfortable seating options
- Cheapest matinee tickets in the area
- 3D movie options for a reasonable price ($11)
- Cozy, less overwhelming environment compared to giant megaplexes
Insider tips
- Call the theater ahead of time during extreme winter weather to confirm the heaters are working in your specific auditorium
- Purchase tickets online in advance to avoid standing outside in the cold at the box office
- Be aware that the armrests are fixed and cannot be raised if you plan on cuddling with your child or partner
- Report disruptive behavior to security immediately, though be prepared for potential delays in resolution
Good to know before you go
- Visiting on freezing cold days without verifying heating status
- Highly anticipated family movie releases if you want to avoid rowdy, unsupervised teen crowds
- Unsupervised younger teens causing major disruptions (running on stairs, using phone flashlights, shouting)
- Staff and security handling disruptions poorly by allowing disruptive patrons back in and talking loudly during the film
- Fixed armrests that do not move up, making it hard to cuddle or share space
- Crowds
- Can feature loud, disruptive groups of unsupervised teens during popular family movie runs, though auditoriums themselves may not be fully packed
- Value
- Excellent value for matinees and 3D films (such as $11 tickets), making it the cheapest local option, though concessions can still run expensive and refunds for disruptions are difficult to obtain.
- Food
- Standard theater concessions available, described by some as a ridiculous amount of money
- Accessibility
- Fixed, non-movable armrests which may restrict comfort or seating adjustments for some guests
- Safety
- On-site security and local police presence to handle disruptive patrons outside the venue

"This was a decent theater. Had to stand outside in the cold to get tickets. The seats were comfortable but very hard to hold my husband's hand because the arm rest was not moveable. Other than that, decent experience"

"My first movie experience at this place wasn't so great. It was 25 degrees F outside and we were told that the heaters of our show auditorium 19 were not working. There was no prior intimation or anything before heading so we could have avoided the drive and cold. Offering the last minute refund after reaching to the theater doesn't help either. Will advise anyone to call before you head and make sure everything is right if it's a special occasion for you."
